The vision for legal sports wagering in Vermont is still very much up in the air.

While Vermont's Sports Betting Study Committee favors the legalization of event betting in the state, it has yet to pick what sort of betting must be enabled, whether there must be online sports wagering.

"We have not yet chose whether to advise just online video gaming, retail, or both," committee chair Wendy Knight said throughout a conference on Tuesday. "I think that those concerns require to be dealt with first before we can then actually understand whether or not we desire to suggest [an] existing administrative structure or a brand-new administrative structure."

Who wants what, where, and when?

The "when" of legal sports wagering in Vermont is agitated as well, although it seems trending towards next year's football season. The legislature is set to assemble again in January, and it's then that legislators will have another opportunity to craft an expense that would license betting in the state.

Another committee member, Rep. Matthew Birong, said they have yet to consider a perfect launch date.

"If this does pass next session, that's like a July 1, most likely, implementation date of everything," Birong stated during the meeting. "Are we, theoretically, best-case scenario saying [we are] up and running [for the] kickoff [of] football season next year?"

Knight noted that research has shown that the "prime" time for sports wagering remains in the fall with the National Football League and state colleges playing video games. However, the chair said there is a looming question about the possibility of a "staggered" launch for sports wagering, too.

"Do we start with online video gaming and then assess to go to a retail market?" Knight asked. "Do we take it in stages?"

Much to believe about

The questions still to be responded to about sports betting in Vermont come as it remains the only New England state without any authorized form of occasion wagering. Maine and Massachusetts took actions this past legislative session to legislate sports betting, however Vermont political leaders just formed their committee, which continues to think about the matter.

The committee heard on Tuesday from the chair of the state's Cannabis Control panel, getting some point of view about the legalization of another previously illegal activity. Still, there are key distinctions between weed and wagering, such as the reality that the former stays unlawful at the federal level.

Sen. Dick Sears mentioned that Vermont lacks the same sort of gambling-related facilities as nearby states. There are no casinos in Vermont, no horse-racing tracks, and no online gambling establishment gaming.
